David

Created between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo Buonarroti, David stands among the defining masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.

Carved from a single block of white marble, the monumental figure rises more than five metres high. Michelangelo presents the biblical hero with extraordinary attention to the human body, balancing idealised beauty with anatomical precision.

David is shown in the tense moment before his confrontation with Goliath. His body remains composed, yet the turn of the head, concentrated gaze and subtle tension of the muscles suggest readiness for the struggle ahead.

Originally commissioned for Florence Cathedral, the sculpture was instead placed outside the Palazzo Vecchio in 1504, where it came to embody the strength and independence of the Florentine Republic.

The original David is today preserved in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, where it remains one of the most celebrated works of Renaissance sculpture.

Mercury Riding Pegasus

Created by the French sculptor Antoine Coysevox between 1698 and 1702, Mercury Riding Pegasus is a monumental marble group commissioned for the royal park at Marly.

Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods, is shown mounted on the rearing Pegasus. The sweeping movement of the horse, drapery and figure turns the sculpture into a dramatic image of speed, triumph and royal grandeur.

The sculpture formed a pair with Coysevox's Fame Riding Pegasus. The two groups were later moved to the entrance of the Tuileries Gardens in 1719, where casts now stand in place of the originals.

The original, carved in Carrara marble and measuring roughly 3.15 metres high, is preserved at the Louvre in the Cour Marly. Its museum inventory number is MR 1822.

Tor, 1844, by Bengt Erland Fogelberg, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm

Tor — Bengt Erland Fogelberg, 1844

Created in 1844 by Swedish sculptor Bengt Erland Fogelberg, Tor is a monumental interpretation of Thor, the Norse god of thunder. Carved in Carrara marble, the sculpture stands 280 centimetres high and weighs more than two tonnes.

Thor was one of the most powerful and widely revered gods of Norse mythology. Associated with thunder, strength and protection, he defended both gods and humankind against the destructive forces represented by the giants.

His most recognisable attribute is Mjolnir, the hammer that embodies his immense power and his role as a protector of the cosmic order. Fogelberg also includes the magical belt of strength and iron gloves traditionally associated with the god.

Fogelberg combined the idealised monumentality of classical sculpture with distinctly Scandinavian mythology. Thor possesses the physical grandeur of an ancient Greek or Roman hero, while his clothing, attributes and identity firmly root the figure in the Nordic tradition.

The sculpture belongs to the collection of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and forms part of Fogelberg's celebrated series of monumental Norse gods, together with Odin and Balder.
